Crowned In Grey
Crowned In Grey
Red (Ruby)
Welcome to Timeless Quilt Studio! The Crowned In Grey block is part of a much larger group of blocks made by pattern designers across the world as part of the Shades of Grey Block Tour. I am thrilled to be a part of this block tour with not one, but TWO blocks. My second block is a “partner” block to this one and releases at the end of April.
If you poke around my website, you’ll notice that my style is modern-traditional. I love exploring the meaning behind traditional blocks or giving them a twist to create something with meaning and help tell a story. I do this by using colour to help tell the story as well as combining different blocks together within a quilt. If you want to learn more about using colour to create meaning in your quilts, I have a blog post all about that!
If you have been following the Shades of Grey Block Tour, you will know that there are guidelines for each designer to follow: use shades of grey with a pop of colour and all blocks must be 6.5”. So, how does a designer make a block that has guidelines applied and still reflects the way I like to incorporate story and meaning into each quilt?
The Story:
I joined the Shades of Grey Block Tour for a simple reason: I was looking for ways to get my patterns in front of more people and build up my email list. What I didn’t expect was the story that it would build.
Crowned in Grey wasn’t originally meant to have a gem-like look! That detail showed up as I was playing around with design ideas and once I saw it, I couldn’t un-see it. The four greys are intentionally placed to create a three dimensional effect and the space it creates to hold one bright centre “gem-stone”.
If I choose a stone for my own story, it’s Ruby, July’s gemstone. It is the month my husband and I married. I started quilting as a result of our cotton anniversary. I wanted to make some napkins in our wedding colours, then my husband wanted a quilt. Saying yes to the quilt was scary at the time … but it became the beginning of something I now treasure.
As you choose your pop of colour, I invite you to choose a colour that honours something that is precious to you.
